There are times when your internet connection is fine but you’re still not able to open any website. One of the possible causes could be the issues with your ISP’s DNS server. Configuring a custom DNS server on your make contribute to make your internet faster and load websites quickly.
There are many ways to get a faster internet speed in Microsoft Windows. Today, I am going to show you a simple DNS hack that can speed up your web browsing considerably. Before that, I need to remind you an obvious thing that happens with most of us when we are using a slow internet connection.

What is DNS?
DNS – Domain Name System – is a naming system that is used to convert the domain names into IP addresses. The domain names are usually alphanumeric for us to remember quickly, but in actuality, the Internet works on IP addresses. The DNS server, for a domain name, returns its corresponding IP address when requested by your computer (client).
The DNS has a network of its own i.e. one DNS server can ask other DNS servers about translating a particular domain name to its corresponding IP address till it gets the correct result.
Computers and other devices make use of IP address to route the traffic, and it is very much similar to dialing a phone number. DNS acts as an intelligent operator that helps us bypass the infinite address book of IP addresses. Your DNS manages this enormous task. How an Alternative DNS Service Will Speed Up Your Browsing?
As I mentioned earlier, your tortoise-like internet speed isn’t always your Internet Service Provider’s fault. Instead, it may be because of an inefficient DNS server. So why not use an alternative DNS service? As the present web pages continue to become more and more complicated by inculcating innumerable things, clients go for multiple DNS lookups for rendering one single web page. With the internet blowing up size by the clock, the existing DNS infrastructure is under more load each day.
Now, I’ll tell you to use free public DNS services that will ask your computer to use custom DNS servers instead of the default DNS server from your ISP. It will help you to get a faster internet speed.
How To Speed Up Web Browsing Using DNS Hack?
To get faster internet speed, I’d like to tell you about OpenDNS. You can also use Google DNS for speeding up your internet. OpenDNS is one of the most popular free DNS services that was started to provide an alternative method to the users who weren’t satisfied with their existing DNS servers.
How to configure OpenDNS in Microsoft Windows?
By following the steps mentioned below, you can set OpenDNS as the preferred DNS server in Microsoft Windows. This will allows various applications to perform nslookup using OpenDNS rather than your ISP’s default DNS servers.
1. To get a faster internet speed using OpenDNS, open Control Panel.
2. Go to Network and Sharing Center.
3. Here, click the name of the network connection, be it WiFi or Ethernet
4. On the next window that pops, click Properties.
5. Click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.
6. Now click Use the following DNS server addresses radio button and enter the addresses given below to get a faster internet speed
Preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222
Alternate DNS server: 208.67.220.220
If you want, you can interchange these addresses. Click OK to save and continue.
How to configure IPv6 custom DNS:
Since the adoption of IPv6 addresses is on the rise, it’s time you should configure iPv6 DNS servers as well. Highlight the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click Properties.
Choose the following DNS server addresses:
Preferred DNS server: 2620:0:ccc::2
Alternate DNS server: 2620:0:ccd::2
How to configure Google Public DNS in Microsoft Windows?
Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers in step 6.
For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.
For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844
Conclusion
In a nutshell, OpenDNS, Google DNS are reduce the time taken to resolve the domain name on the web and make the internet faster in the process. Obviously, it won’t increase the maximum available bandwidth for your connection. Moreover, they are more reliable than the default ones used by your ISP. Do I need to mention one of them is maintained by Google? These custom DNS servers face downtime, due to power outages or some other hardware issues, less often.
Both Google DNS and OpenDNS work just fine but people prefer Google DNS these days. You can choose to go for any of these and see if your internet speeds up.
Why Does 64-Bit Windows Need Two Program Files Folders — Program Files & Program Files (x86)
Ever wondered why 64-bit Windows needs to have two Program Files folders? This is done to separate the 32-bit DLL executables from 64-bit DLLs. It also eliminates the chances of a 32-bit application trying to load a 64-bit DLL, fail, and give an error message.
Back in 2005, Microsoft launched both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows operating system. This was done to support new 64-bit CPUs. The 64-bit CPUs have the ability to work with large numbers and access more memory.
If you’re running 64-bit Windows operating system, you might have noticed that your PC has two Program Files folders. One is the regular Program Files and the other one is Program Files (x86). But, why is it necessary? What’s the difference between these two folders?
Well, to answer these questions, one should understand that 64-bit applications are compiled differently. While a program with 64-bit instructions can’t be read by PCs with 32-bit CPUs, a 32-bit program can be read by 64-bit CPU.
Windows has a separate Program Files (x86) folder, Why?
Whenever you install any program on a computer with 64-bit CPU, its folders are, more or less, intended for 64-bit content. When a 32-bit program tries to use a 64-bit component, it faces some problems.
So, Windows separates the directories of 64-bit and 32-bit programs. The Program Files (x86) is the one for storing 32-bit program. x86 stands for the type of processors — 286, 386, 486, 586(Pentium).
Another reason is that 64-bit software doesn’t act nicely with 32-bit extensions, and vice versa. It increases the chances of a conflict if you happen to install both 64-bit and 32-bit versions of a program on the same system.
Last but not the least, having two separate Program Files folders ensures that 32-bit applications, unaware about a 64-bit system, work. Separating both kinds of applications will eliminate the chances of a 32-bit application trying to load a 64-bit DLL, fail, and give an error message.
Apart from the Program Files, there are some other Windows components that have both 32-bit and 64-bit copies. Some of these are stored in winsxs (stands for windows side by side) and syswow64 (Windows 32 on Windows 64).

The CISSP also requires more than simply passing a test to maintain the certification - those who hold the certification are required to demonstrate on-going experience and education in the field of IT security over time.
6. Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
According to a recent survey by jobs site Dice.com, 8 out of 10 respondents indicated that hiring Linux talent was a priority for 2012, and Red Hat Linux continues to make serious headway in the enterprise. The RHCE is a challenging certification to obtain, and requires advanced knowledge of a range of Red Hat systems administration tasks. The RHCE becomes even more valuable with the completion of any of a number of optional Certificates of Expertise, which cover a range of topics such as system clustering and virtualization.
7. CCNA or CCDA
Both of these certifications will require some dedicated training if you are new to IT. These will be tough for those considering a career change, but well worth the effort. 8. Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)

Understanding The New MCSE
As part of their strategic push into cloud computing, Microsoft has recently introduced a new line of certifications, aimed at fostering a base of expertise centered on cloud computing technologies and solution design, involving the creation/re-invention of several Microsoft certifications.
The flagship of this new certification framework is the Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert, or MCSE.
Many who have followed Microsoft certifications over the years will recognize the initials, because this isn’t the first time that Microsoft has offered a certification called the MCSE. In fact, the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, also called the MCSE, was one of the most popular certifications ever offered by Microsoft.
But there are significant differences between the two certifications. Whereas the old MCSE focused on server-based administration and technologies, the new MCSE takes more of a multi-disciplinarian approach to solving business IT problems, with a strong focus on cloud computing, database administration, and business intelligence.
Today’s version of the MCSE certification breaks down into two general categories and three individual tracks that can be followed to achieve MCSE certification.
MCSE for Private Cloud :
This is the closest equivalent to the old MCSE, in that it focuses on the server & operating system, but with a twist. The new MCSE is truly focused on the cloud, specifically private clouds managed with Microsoft System Center 2012.
The MCSE for Private cloud is based on the completion of the following:
- Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) – Completion of the MCSA is a pre-requisite for all MCSE tracks.
- Exam 70-247: Configuring and Deploying a Private Cloud with System Center 2012 – System Center is Microsoft’s cloud management platform, allowing administrators to create and manage multi-hypervisor cloud environments.
- Exam 70-256: Monitoring and Operating a Private Cloud with System Center 2012 – Related to the exam above, this exam tests the candidate’s ability to perform ongoing administration tasks in a System Center 2012-managed environment.
MCSE for SQL Server 2012 :In addition to the MCSE for Private Cloud, and in conjunction with Microsoft’s impending release of SQL Server 2012, Microsoft is offering the MCSE for SQL Server 2012. The two tracks for certification in this category are:
The MCSE: Data Platform : The MCSE Data Platform certification demonstrates the ability to build and manage data solutions based on SQL Server 2012, in both traditional ‘on-premise’ and cloud-based environments. The MCSE Data Platform certification is based on successful completion of the MCSA for SQL Server 2012, plus two additional tests:
- Exam 70-464: Developing Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Databases –Tests the ability to build and implement databases, and perform common administration tasks such as planning and creating database files and indexes, stored procedures, managing transactions and locks, etc.
- Exam 70-465: Designing Database Solutions for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - Tests the ability to architect and design database solutions, involving the planning and design of the database environment, including objects, servers, and storage.
MCSE - Business Intelligence : The MCSE for Business Intelligence is specifically designed for IT professionals and DBAs that work on Business Intelligence (BI) projects for enterprises. As such, the tests for the MCSE Business Intelligence have a different focus as well. As with the MCSE for Data Platform, Candidates still must complete the MCSA for SQL Server 2012, as a pre-requisite, and additionally complete two certification exams. Those exams are:
- Exam 70-466: Implementing Data Models and Reports with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 –Covers the creation of multi-dimensional models, OLAP cubes, and information displays.
- Exam 70-467: Designing Business Intelligence Solutions with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - Tests the candidate’s ability to architect and design database solutions, involving the planning and design of the database environment, including objects, servers, and storage.
